The Garden of Oz

Welcome to The Garden of Oz

At the Philadelphia Flower show I met this lovely lady selling worm compost kits. I'm ashamed to admit I lost her brochure, but our conversation stuck with me and I've decided it is time to give worm composting a try. I believe she was selling models similar to the one pictured below:

She discussed the advantages of these multi layer bins, and the need for a drain. It reminded me of the Compost-twin "the Cadillac of compost tumblers", because it has two bins and you can compost in batches. One would add material in the top layer and remove the castings from the bottom layer.

Since this is new to me I think I can spend a few dollars on a setup, but what is the best setup for the money? Some start at $50

Some can go as high as $159!

If I do spend some money I'd like to support the right person or organization. But there are many worm compost merchants out there. What is the best fit for a beginner?

My friends at Howtocompost.org have a long list of Vermi links and articles, but I could not find one that truly stood out as the best for beginners. So I created a topic in the forum /topics/starting-my-first-worm-compost Please let me know if you know of a good dealer or bin model perfect for beginners.

While I know a great deal about composting, tillers and gardening I feel like a fish out of water when it comes to worm composting. Check back and see how I make out.
